Africa Reading Challenge

Came across a to me new blog and noticed he's hosting a fun reading challenge and decided to join, which is why this and subsequent challenge blog posts is/will be in English. So here's my list of 6 Africa-related books that I will read through 2008. Basically I just extracted Africa-related books from my to read-list, so it was easy to compile.

Read, reviewed:
  • Scroggins, Deborah: Emma's War (Sudan)
  • Courtemanche, Gil: A Sunday at the Pool in Kigali (Rwanda)
  • Adichie, Chimamanda Ngozi: Half of a Yellow Sun (Nigeria)
  • Coetzee, J.M.: Waiting for the Barbarians (South Africa)
  • Coetzee, J.M.: Foe (South Africa)
  • Coetzee, J.M.: Age of Iron (South Africa)

Runners up:

  • Diop, Anta: Black Africa (continent-wide)
  • Soyinka, Wole: Death and the King's Horsemen (Nigeria)
  • Chinua Achebe: Things Fall Apart (Nigeria)
  • Mahfouz, Naguib: The Cairo Trilogy (Egypt)
  • Hochschild, Adam: King Leopold's Ghost ((Democratic Republic of the) Congo)
  • J.M. Coetzee: Diary of a Bad Year (South Africa)
  • J.M. Coetzee: Disgrace (South Africa)

So, now when you have read Emma's war, you have to give everyone a review. I obviously think it's a great book, but I am a bit of a Sudan-fanatic (mind you, liked it even before that). Disgrace is also a great read. Det kryper helt enkelt i skinnet när man läser den.

I suggest you also put up Half of a Yellow Sun, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (Nigeria) on your list. It is on mine. then we can discuss it :-)
